Beautiful Trees We Don’t Offer (and why)

At Black Hills Gardens, our goal is simple: to set you up for success in your Black Hills garden projects. We believe gardening should be rewarding, not frustrating.

Because our region has a challenging climate (mostly Zone 4 hardiness, alkaline soil, strong winds), we carefully curate our inventory to include only plants that are highly reliable and proven to thrive here without specialized, ongoing care.

Below are some beautiful trees that you might find tempting, but we’ve found they just aren’t the best fit for the typical Black Hills yard. We encourage you to choose alternatives that are better suited for guaranteed success!

The Trees That Struggle Here (And What to Plant Instead)

We won’t stock the following trees because they are either borderline hardy, require intensive maintenance, or face significant local challenges:

Problem TreeThe Issue in the Black HillsOur Recommended Alternatives (Which We Offer!)
Ohio BuckeyeBorderline hardiness and sensitive to strong winds and high-pH soils. Prone to leaf scorch.Bur Oak or Amur Maple: Native, tough, and reliable shade trees.
Kentucky CoffeetreeVery difficult to establish and slow-growing; typically grown from seed and takes many years to reach a good size.Amur Maple or River Birch: Faster growing, reliable shade trees that establish easier.
Black WalnutHardy, but produces a chemical that harms many surrounding garden plants. Difficult to transplant successfully.Bur Oak or Amur Maple: Tough shade trees that play well with others in your garden.
HawthornHardy but highly susceptible to cedar-apple rust and fireblight, requiring fungicide sprays.Sugar Tyme Crabapple or Siberian Crabapple: Disease-resistant, beautiful flowering alternatives.
HackberryHardy, but slow-growing and can have highly variable growth forms.Bur Oak or Amur Maple: Proven shade trees with better form and faster establishment rates.

Why We Choose Reliability Over Novelty

We understand the appeal of a unique, challenging tree. But at Black Hills Gardens, we believe your time and effort are valuable.

By focusing our inventory on proven, resilient species, we ensure that the plants you take home thrive in our specific regional conditions, making your gardening experience successful and enjoyable.
