Highbush Cranberry

Highbush Cranberry (Viburnum trilobum, sometimes listed as Viburnum opulus var. americanum) is a hardy, multi-season shrub valued for its spring flowers, bright red fruit, outstanding fall color, and exceptional wildlife benefits.

Despite its name, Highbush Cranberry is not a true cranberry. It is a large shrub that produces clusters of bright red berries that resemble cranberries and can be used in many of the same recipes.

Why Grow Highbush Cranberry?

Highbush Cranberry is one of the most versatile shrubs for northern landscapes. It offers attractive flowers in spring, colorful fruit in fall and winter, and excellent wildlife value throughout the year.

It is commonly planted for:

  • Wildlife habitat
  • Edible landscapes
  • Privacy screens
  • Shelterbelts
  • Native and naturalized plantings
  • Seasonal color

Flowers and Fruit

Clusters of white flowers appear in late spring and are attractive to pollinators.

By late summer and fall, the shrub develops bright red berry clusters that often remain on the plant well into winter.

The berries can be harvested for:

  • Jelly
  • Syrup
  • Sauce
  • Juice

Many people wait until after a frost to harvest, as cold weather can improve flavor.

Wildlife Benefits

Highbush Cranberry is one of the best wildlife shrubs available for northern landscapes.

Benefits include:

  • Pollinator-friendly flowers
  • Dense nesting habitat
  • Winter cover for birds
  • Persistent fruit that feeds wildlife into winter

Pollination

Highbush Cranberry is self-fertile and can produce fruit on its own.

However, planting two or more shrubs often results in heavier fruit production and larger crops.

Planting and Care

Highbush Cranberry grows best in full sun to part shade and adapts well to many soil types.

It prefers moderate moisture but is adaptable once established.

Allow adequate room for mature growth, as plants can eventually become large, rounded shrubs.

Best Use in the Black Hills

Highbush Cranberry is an excellent choice for Black Hills landscapes where homeowners want a shrub that provides beauty, wildlife value, and edible fruit.

Its combination of flowers, berries, fall color, and cold hardiness make it one of the most useful shrubs for acreage plantings and home landscapes alike.
