About Us!

Creating the perfect refuge in the Black Hills

Welcome to Black Hills Gardens! We are a family owned and operated plant nursery proudly rooted right here in the hills of Hermosa, South Dakota.

Our mission is simple: to provide the Black Hills community with the toughest, most beautiful, and reliable plants that aren’t just surviving here—they’re thriving here. We want to set you up for success, not sell you some ‘cool, but soon to die’ plant that will knock the wind out of your sails.

We believe in the timeless value of heritage varieties. We specialize in those classic lilacs and hydrangeas that have thrived in Black Hills gardens for generations. We offer many other tried and true perennials, as well. We’re proud to do our part to keep these proven, traditional plants alive and available for local gardeners.

By focusing purely on classic, reliable, open-source varieties, we avoid commercial licensing fees. That’s how we keep our prices fair and competitive while offering exceptionally high-quality, proven plants.

Our Story: From a Backyard Dream to Your Garden’s Solution
We started Black Hills Gardens in 2023 right in our own backyard. Frustrated by constantly buying plants from big box stores that couldn’t handle the challenging SD climate—the harsh winters, late spring frosts, and dry summers—we began a mission: to grow and propagate resilient species specifically adapted to the Black Hills.

What began as a passion project first focused on lilacs and hydrangeas and then native chokecherries and hardy maples which quickly grew into the nursery you see today. We are still growing. We believe in getting our hands dirty and truly understanding which plants can weather a Black Hills year.

What Makes Us Different? While we have some local expertise & hardy plants, what really sets us apart is our ability to find stuff out. We are not embarrassed when we don’t know something. We just go learn and share.

We don’t just sell plants; we sell success. Our expertise is tailored specifically to the unique microclimates of the Black Hills region (USDA Zones 3-5).

  • Climate-Proof Inventory: We focus on plants known for their extreme cold hardiness, drought tolerance, and disease resistance.
  • Native & Resilient Focus: Our specialty is native SD plants like Bur Oak, Quaking Aspen, and Buffaloberry, which provide habitat, beauty, and function with minimal fuss.
  • Expert Advice You Can Trust: When you shop with us, you’re getting advice from people who understand your soil, your weather, and your gardening challenges. And we REALLY understand the challenges of digging in rock. We help you choose the right plant for the right place the first time.

The Black Hills Gardens is Zone 5, but most of the Black Hills is Zone 4, with a tiny portion of Zone 3. If you are in Zone 3, let us know, and we’ll keep you from buying a ‘cool-but-soon-to-be-dead-in-your-zone’ plant. If you don’t know your zone, check this out. However, please understand that no matter what ‘zone’ you are in, you are still dealing with other zones and their characteristics. See below.

About the USDA Zones for the Black Hills: Here is an illustration showing the USDA Hardiness Zones in the Black Hills area and across South Dakota:

Zone Breakdown for the Region:

  • Zone 4 (-30°F to -20°F): Dominates the majority of South Dakota surrounding the Black Hills.
  • Zone 5 (-20°F to -10°F): Covers much of the Black Hills area, including Rapid City.

Understanding these microclimates is crucial for choosing the right plants, as plants rated for Zone 5 may struggle in the colder Zone 4 areas outside the immediate Hills region and also in borderline zone areas within the Black Hills. There are areas in the Black Hills that are more sheltered and others that are more exposed.
